Toronto based Cuban music artist Luis Mario Ochoa launches his new album 'Cimarrón' on January 24th at The MOD Club Theater.
Havana born, Toronto based guitarist/vocalist/composer arranger Luis Mario Ochoa launches his new Latin Jazz album entitled 'Cimarrón' at a special CD launch party on Tuesday Jan 24 at The MOD Club Theater, 722 College Street. Doors open at 8 pm. Admission is $15.00 or $25.00 including CD purchase.
Joining Ochoa for the launch party will be his All Star 10 piece group that includes many of the brilliant musicians who appear on the album, including Russ Little on trombone, Chendy Leon Jr on drums, pianist David Virelles and saxophone player John Johnston.
Says Ochoa, “I am fortunate to have such a wealth of talent and musicianship in my group. They are my friends and a source of motivation for me”
The new album, which Ochoa describes as 'Cuban jazz fusion', features guest appearances from the legendary Paquito D'Rivera, from Canadian jazz luminaries Guido Basso and Hilario Duran, and features many of the cream of Toronto's thriving Latin music scene - a community that Ochoa has been a leader of since moving to Toronto in 1990.
'Cimarrón' has already been lauded by the influential Descarga.com web site as "a fresh, up-tempo and high caliber Latin Jazz release that provides a well conceived format for (Ochoa's) fine guitar work".
With a repertoire of material that include five original compositions, several classics from both the Cuban and American songbooks, and a dazzling samba composed by Paquito D'Rivera- each of the ten tracks on 'Cimarrón' is a showcase for Luis Mario Ochoa’s quest to combine the rhythms of Cuban music with the sound of North American jazz. Showcasing his considerable skills as a vocalist, composer, guitarist and arranger extraordinaire, Luis Mario Ochoa has recorded an album destined to receive many repeat plays from Latin Jazz lovers, Cuban music fans, and the Canadian Jazz audience who have always supported his musical endeavors.
